Update of Authentication to Kerberos 5 |
You can probably ignore this message:Back in January, authentication to Glue/PNCE-Unix systems was changed to use the campus directory ID and password. However, use of the old authentication system was still allowed so that people with older AFS clients on their PCs, etc. could still connect. The old authentication system will be turned off as of May 31. This means that if you have any system that still uses the old authentication system, it will stop working properly next month unless you upgrade your AFS client.
- If you do not use AFS,
- Or do not know what AFS is,
- Or do not have your PC set up so that you can access the same files that you have available when you log into login.physics.umd.edu, etc. as if they were on your PC
- If you are unsure, please submit a physhelp.
A quick check to see if your system is affected is if you still need to enter your old (pre-January) Glue password to access anything – if you do, you are affected, if not you should be safe.
The systems primarily affected will be PCs or other non-Glued systems that use AFS to access files on Glued systems. PCs and MACs will need to install MIT's free Kerberos for Windows client or OS X Kerberos Extras, and may also need to upgrade their OpenAFS client.

Please contact PCS via physhelp if you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter.
