GigE Network in Physics Is Active |
Most station jacks (the new jacks/wallplates installed over the Fall 2006 season) have been patched through to the network switches. These station jacks were installed according to the distribution of the old network, that is, one station wallplate with two jacks was installed for each old wallplate. Not all jacks are active, however. Only activated were those station wallplates closest to the location of equipment you had installed as of last fall; in those cases activation was effected on the odd numbered or left hand jack on each station wallplate.
PCS will provide the necessary cabling to connect your computer. These are specialized cables conforming to the CAT-6a standard. At present only 14' cables are available. Should you need longer cables, please contact PCS. NOTE: Depending on your room location, cable lengths exceeding 14' may result in degraded performance. Use of non-CAT-6a cables may also result in degraded performance.
In order to receive these you may either:
Your computer should then autonegotiate the maximum connection speed. The computer network card in your computer will then set its communication speed to the highest it is capable of (not all computers will function at the 1000Base-T rate; some will only be capable of 100Base-T or 10Base-T (the present old network speed)).
