Physics Department Print Quotas

Physics Print Quota Policy

The department provides a free print quota of 500 pages/semester to undergraduate Physics majors, graduate students in Physics, and, after application through the Physics Student Services Office (PHY-1120), teaching assistants for Physics courses to be used in support of their Physics course work and teaching. Half TA's get a quota of 250 pages/semester. The two summer sessions are considered a single semester for this purpose. Quotas for students and TA's are additive (e.g. a graduate student with a full TA gets an effective quota of 1000 pages.) These quotas are non-refundable, non-transferable, and do not carry over from semester to semester. The free quotas are a privilege, and the department reserves the right to revoke this privilege without notice at any time. As with all other use of computers in the Physics OWL in the department, users are expected to adhere to the Campus Acceptable Use Guidelines.

Obtaining your print quota

Quotas for graduate students and undergraduate majors are established automatically when the student requests access to departmental resources for his or her account, or upon creation of a new graduate student account with access to Physics resources. Note that it may take a day to activate the quota after eligibility for access has been approved.

TA's who do not have their print quotas after the TA assignment meeting at the beginning of the semester should apply through the Physics Student Services Office (PHY-1120) or use the physhelp command to send a request for a TA quota. Be sure to give your name, your GLUE or PNCE account name, the course you are TA'ing, and be sure to mention that you are requesting a TA print quota. A glue account is required for activation of a free print quota. If you do not have a glue account, get one and then request your TA quota. TA's are advised to give their GLUE or PNCE email address to Physics Student Services when requesting the TA position; this will greatly increase the chance of your quota being automatically activated.

Viewing your print quota

To view your quota, at the Unix command prompt type

acctquery -q powl

(Note: Jobs on powl, powl2, and powl3 are charged to the same quota, so replacing powl with powl2 doesn't give any additional information.) The information is all in dollar amounts, with a conversion rate of $0.10/page. The Free limit field shows the free quota granted to you as a Physics student, the Paid limit field shows the quota given you as a TA. The Free usage and Paid usage fields show what you have consumed against your quotas. Note that once the free quotas are granted, we do not distiguish between TA and coursework usage. All charges will be made against your student quota until that is consumed, at which point charges will be made against the TA quota, if it exists.

When your quota is used up...

When your quota is used up, print jobs sent to the quota'ed queue will not print and simply vanish from the queue without warning. The free quotas are considered quite generous to meet the needs of Physics majors and graduate students in their Physics coursework, and for the use of teaching assistants in their instruction. This quota is not intended to subsidize research or personal activities; research related printing should be done on printers provided by your research group, or on a Pay-4-Print account on their FAS. You are free to petition the Associate Chair for Facilities and Personnel, Professor D. Baden, if you feel you have exceptional circumstances warranting you quota to be increased, but your request is unlikely to be granted unless you can prove that your quota was used only for course-related work.

If your quota is used up, you should start using one of the pay-for-print queues for printing. Research groups can obtain pay-for-print accounts paid for by an FAS for their students, etc.

What to do if there are problems

If a first-aider is available, ask for their assistance. You should also check that your quota hasn't been consumed, in which case the print job will fail silently. (See Viewing your quota). Powlprint can fail for a number of reasons, most common problems are that the rshd process is not running or the pay-for-print screen was exitted. If the first aider is unable to resolve your problem to your satisfaction, please submit a physhelp request.

If there is a problems regarding your quota, eg you accidentally printed out a binary file or left yourself logged in and someone else used up your quota, please contact the first aider on duty, if present, and (either by yourself or preferably with the first aider) submit a physhelp request describing the problem. Such reports should be made immediately upon being aware of the problem; we will disregard requests made over a day after the incident. These requests will be determined on a case by case basis, and it is suggested you retain any "evidence" that might assist in porving your case.

NOTE:Please contact systems staff whenever you have reason to suspect unauthorized usage of your account.
