Printing in the Physics OWL
There are two printers in the Physics OWL area, one in each of
the two rooms. Associated with
each printer are two print queues; one for pay-for-print, and the other to
provide a free quota
of printing to Physics Department students in their
academic work and/or as Physics TA's. Information about
pay-for-print accounts can be obtained from Laser Print Cost Recovery in
room 1400 of the Computer & Space Sciences Building. The queue names and
locations are listed in the table below.

Users can print to either the Pay-for-Print or the quota'd queues from
PNCE-Unix environment using the
qpr command. The PC's in the
Physics OWL automatically print to the Pay-for-Print queues; to submit to
the quota'ed queue, follow the procedure below.
In order to access your Physics Departmental Printing Quota when printing from
a PC application in the Physics OWL, you must do the following:
- Print as you normally do from your Windows application.
- When the application is finished printing, wait until the
Pay-For-Print dialog box appears. It might be underneath other windows,
so you might have to minimize the application.
- DO NOT press any buttons on the Pay-For-Print
box at this time.
- Telnet to login.physics.umd.edu using Telnet SSH Application
and loggin into your PNCE-Unix Glue account
(or skip this step if you are already logged in).
NOTE:You must have a direct telnet
session from your
PC to login.physics.umd.edu. E. g., telneting to WAM
and then from WAM.umd.edu to login.physics.umd.edu will not work.
- Type 'powlprint' (without the quotes) at the prompt on
login.physics.umd.edu
Your output should go to the printer in the same room as the PC you
are sitting at. Alternatively, you can specify either
powlprint powl
or powlprint powl2 to direct the output to a specific
POWL printer. TA Office (POWL-3) computers print to the printer
in PHY-3111.
- Press the "Cancel" button on the Pay-For-Print dialog box.
- Pick up your printout.
Troubleshooting 'powlprint' Problems:
- If you get the error message "Connection Refused" on login.physics.umd.edu
in response to the 'powlprint' command, the "powlprint rpcd" was
probably stopped on your POWL machine. You can
restart the 'powlprint rpcd' server from either the "Start
Menu" or from POWLPRINT desktop icon.
- If you get a different "rcp:...." error message, you may have
accidentally removed your print job by doing something with
the Pay-For-Print dialog box. Please retry printing from
your application and then follow the above procedure.
- If you cannot resolve the problem, get the First-Aider's help.
You might also restart your system and try again.
- If a First-Aider is unavailable or unable to resolve your problem,
please submit a request through physhelp.
Please include a detailed description of the problem -- what you
did, how the computer replied, what POWL machine you were on,
etc.
Comments:
- The Campus Pay-For-Print system was implemented in the Physics OWL
due to the high use and abuse of the printing in this facility.
The department could no longer afford to support this.
- If you find the above bypass to the Pay-For-Print process too time
consuming or confusing, you can simplify this process by obtaining
and using a Campus Pay-For-Print account.
- Non-Physics majors and non-TAs will NOT be given free
print quotas.
