Printing email from the PNCE Environment

There are several methods for printing your PNCE email, depending on how you access your email and where you want to print it. These options are listed below; follow the links for more detail.

Printing from Simeon

This section assumes you access your email from a PC using the program Simeon. I also assume you either have a printer attached directly to your PC, or your PC is set up to print to a networked printer, and that you can print successfully from other applications on your PC.

To print the message you are reading from Simeon, go to the File menu item and select Print. The output will go to your default Windows printer. You can also select Print Setup from the File menu to do more configuration.

Printing from a PC using Pine

This section assumes you use Pine to read your mail, and that you connect to an Unix machine by telnetting from your PC. I also assume you want to print to a printer that is either attached directly to your PC, or one that is accessible to your PC over the network, and that you are able to print to it from other applications.

This method will work if the telnet program you use is QvtNet Telnet or the McGill 3270 terminal emulator. It will not work with the MS DOS 7 telnet command, and might or might not work with other telnet programs. If you are having trouble, I recommend that you use a different telnet program. If for some reason you cannot switch telnet programs, you may want to see if the printer you wish to print to already has a PNCE-Unix queue and if so follow the instructions for printing from Pine to a PNCE-Unix queue. Otherwise, put in a request to physhelp clearly stating the problem and what you want.

If your pine program is configured correctly, when you are reading a message, hit the "Y" key. You should get a message asking whether you wish to print that message using "attached-to-ansi". Answer yes, and your output should be sent to the default printer for your PC.

If this does not seem to work, first check that your pine settings are correct. From the Main menu ("M") select Setup ("S") and Printer ("P"). You should ensure attached-to-ansi is selected as your default printer. If not, move the cursor to select it, hit "S" to set it, and try again. If this is set correctly and you still have trouble, and you are using QvtNet or McGill 3270 terminal emulator, then leave a detailed message in physhelp discussing your problem in detail.

Printing from Pine to PNCE-Unix queues

This section assumes that you use Pine to read your email on a PNCE-Unix machine, and that you want to print your email to a PNCE-Unix print queue. Before you do this, you will have to configure pine to use the printer---this need only be done once, and afterwards all future output will go to the specified printer.

To do so, from the Main menu ("M") select Setup ("S") and Printer ("P"). You have two options at this point:

Once you pine is configured properly, you can print a message you are reading by typing "Y".

Printing from other mail programs

Physics Computing Services can only provide support for reading email with Pine or Simeon. However, if you decide to use another email program (and you are warned that you do so at your own risk), some of the methods described above may still work for you with minor modifications. PC based programs should print email to your default printer in a manner similiar to Simeon, and if you telnet to an Unix machine from your PC, your Unix mail program may support something similar to an attached-to-ansi option. Otherwise, Unix mail programs should allow you to set a print queue and print command. If you have problems, SWITCH TO Pine or SIMEON. Do not call us about problems with other mail programs.
